Newsletter Vol. #66 Thats how I see it!

Had a bit of a problem with my computer, again, so I was late in sending out the last newsletter but I am back on track. I know what your thinking-that it's me, and you'd be correct.

Work Less Feel Better!

Just when you think you have it figured out, along comes a new study to improve/confuse the issue.

Wellness; taking care of self; leading a healthy balanced life- you know like exercise, eating right, getting enough sleep, finding fulfilling activity, times with good friends, staying out of the sun. Suggestions and ways of living making I have been making for

over 40 years.

Then I read in the Free Press (Thomas Heath) that a new study out of Sweden that states, "Nurses were happier, healthier and more energetic when working six-hour days instead of eight-hours." Well yeah, what a surprise. Two hours less work a day

will do that for a person, that is leave you with more energy. In Manitoba nurses work 12-hour shifts and certainly struggle with fatigue and finding time for a life.

The study concluded several things: --that nurses working six hours took 4.7 per cent fewer sick days and fewer work absences than those working eight hours; --that six hour nurses were, "more active, less sick; less stressed and had less back, neck and shoulder pain than nurses working eight-hour shifts; --that with fewer hours the nurses better managed their duties, including spending more time with residents.

I remember a great number of years ago discussing this issue of eight-hour shifts versus 12-hour shifts with a group of nurses. I could not see how working that many hours (and 12 always turns out to be 13 hours) could possibly be good for their health, that it certainly would affect their efficiency, and would significantly interfere with their developing a healthy lifestyle.

Annie Perrin, a partner at Leader's Quest, a non-profit leadership development organization, said improving the work lives of nurses could reduce burnout, keep good nurses on staff longer and improve the experience of patients with better care and compassion.

I don't suppose it matters who the employer is, or what profession or job you are in, for economic reasons it makes sense to work you long hours (less scheduling, less training, less replacement workers, less benefits, etc.). However, this many years later, I still maintain that any system/employer that improves the health of its employees will come out significantly ahead economically.

                        - That it has been said that most "mental illness" is the result   of stress acting on a vulnerable individual.

Excerpt from David Baldacci, "Total Control"

I really like this author; he does extensive research into the plausible parts of his fictional novels. In this case it was computers. In his own words:

"Regarding the computer-technological aspects of Total Control, all of them, to the best of my research ability, are perfectly plausible if they are not already in full-scale use or perhaps even, if you can believe it, obsolete."

You don't have to be on-line to get hacked. Ever heard of Van Eck radiation? It's really electromagnetic eavesdropping.

All electrical current produces a magnetic field, thus computers emit magnetic fields, relatively strong ones. These transmissions can be easily captured and recorded. On top of it, computers also give off digital impulses. This CRT throws off clear video images if you have the right receiving equipment, which is widely available. I could drive through any city with a directional antenna, a black-and-white TV and a few bucks worth of electronic parts and steal the information on every computer network in every law firm, accounting firm and government facility in the city. If it's on someone else's screen--I can see it.

How do you ask? The shapes and lines on a computer screen are composed of millions of tiny dots called picture elements- or pixels, for short. When you type in a command, electrons are fired at the appropriate spot on the screen to light appropriate pixels- like painting a picture. The computer screen must be continually refreshed with electrons to keep the pixels lit. Whether you're playing a computer game or doing word-processing or what ever, that's how you can see things on your screen. Each time electrons are shot at the screen; they give off a high-voltage pulse of electromagnetic emissions. A TV monitor can receive these pulses pixel by pixel. However, since an ordinary TV monitor can adequately organize these pixels to reconstruct what's on your screen, an artificial synchronization signal is used so of that the picture can be exactly reproduced.

Printer? Fax? Cellular phone? Give me one minute with a scanner and I can have your internal electronic serial number, or ESN, your cell phone number, your station class data and the phones maker. I program that data into another cell phone with some reconfigured chips, and I start selling long-distance service and charge it to you. Any information that flows through a computer, either through the phone lines or through the air, is fair game and what doesn't these days? Absolutely nothing is safe. Because of these security issues it is quite conceivable that we will be going back to typewriters and 'snail mail' in the near future.

*I do recommend this book and encourage you to let me know of other great books that you are reading. A brief summary or testimonial would be great.

Did you know?

That the basis of a great deal of the self-destructive behavior occurring in society is merely an attempt to give purpose to one's life. Lack of purpose can lead to feelings of emptiness, depression and to "soft" addictions like - overeating, overspending, misuse of the Internet, and procrastination.

I need to send you off with a laugh.
